A colleague recently got me thinking about the difference between a cause driven career versus a purpose driven career.
I love the subtle but profound difference.
A cause-driven career is focused on what you’re doing. This might be working in a direct service organization or working for a mission you believe in.
A purpose-driven career is not about what you’re doing, but rather, how you’re being.
In a purpose-driven career, you see yourself as part of the bigger picture. You understand the connection between the day-to-day work, your personal values, the values of the org/company.
Martin Seligman, author of Flourish, suggests that the five aspects below illustrates what a purpose-driven career looks like:
1. Positive Emotions: Having the feelings of belonging, gratitide, and inspiration at work.
2. Engaged: Feeling fully alive, present, and committed in your job and to your organization/company.
3. Purposeful Relationships: Feeling connected to the people you work with and developing authentic relationships.
4. Meaning: Finding clarity around how your values inform your life/career.
5. Accomplishments: Achieving your goals.
